How Do Publishers Benefit from Fixed-Layout ePUB Conversion?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In the last few years, the rapid popularity of eBooks has given authors and publishers an excellent opportunity to offer their work to a broader audience in the simplest way. However, it also made them think about streamlining the various aspects of their eBook production, the format being the most important. Typically, publishers and authors can choose one of the two main layouts –  Reflowable layout Fixed layout While the reflowable layout approaches the content as floating text and images arranged as per the screen size, the fixed layout format involves a predetermined image and text placement similar to PDF files.  Although the formats have their benefits and limitations, a fixed-layout format is a preferred choice for eBooks nowadays, as it enables publishers to create more engaging content with an image-rich outlook and a comprehensive design.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”What is Fixed-Layout ePUB Conversion?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1646041188098{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]In the digital publishing domain, certain eBooks require a precise and consistent layout and pagination. These are mainly books that rely heavily on large illustrations, design elements, and photos. This means that the reader cannot alter certain components, including fonts, line spacing, line margin, or text sizes of any page in the fixed layout eBooks. Further, based on the target audience and the devices on which the content can be displayed, different eBooks have different formats, and one of these is the ePUB format. Put simply, a fixed-layout ePUB is a file whose layout readers cannot change.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How do publishers benefit from fixed-layout ePUB conversion?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1616076716787{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]ePUB is the most favoured eBook format in the publishing industry. Almost every popular e-reader, including KITABOO, Kobo eReader, iBooks, Barnes & Noble, and Sony Reader support the format. Being a popular format for graphically illustrated eBooks, the fixed-layout ePUB conversion is majorly preferred for cookbooks, children’s books, academic publications, travel guides, and textbooks.  Among the various advantages that the fixed layout eBook conversion offers to the publishers include- 1. Complete control for publishers In the case of a fixed layout, the author/publisher has complete control over how their eBook is displayed on the screen. Right from images to audio narration interlinked with texts, they can control various aspects of the eBook. To accurately control the layout of the images, text, and other items on the pages, the fixed layout ePub format takes advantage of pixel-specific page size, in contrast to the standard ePub format. 2. Zoom-in view  Conventional ePUB readers enable the users to expand the font size to get clear visibility, but they don’t enable the pictures or images to be zoomed in for superior browsing. Fixed-layout ePUB conversion, on the contrary, gives you the benefit of zooming, which allows readers to focus on the images they would like to see and can look for specific information. The zooming option of these fixed layout ePub conversion services also makes it simpler for the reader to notice the detailed pictures. 3. Easy search options Fixed layout ePUB conversion allows for easy searching of particular information or a piece of text, along with choosing the text sizes and embedding the required fonts. 4. Content independence Content independence is another key benefit of fixed layout ePUB conversion as this format is varied across different software and devices. What this means is that the designers have to specialize in one or two devices and software, thus boosting the overall content quality in the long run. 5. Use of CSS and JavaScript Fixed layout format uses CSS and JavaScript to add features like animations for elements such as games, quizzes, multiple-choice questions, and other interactivities. This is to ensure that your content becomes much more interactive and appealing to the readers. 6. Allows embedded text & images The format allows publishers to incorporate embedded text or image descriptions to make illustrations and charts more accessible to readers and read-aloud listeners. There are multiple other features that ePUB offers, including – Thumbnail navigation, bookmark, and dictionary linking Incorporation of audio, video, and text to speech feature Allows multi-column text pages with semantic structuring for better accessibility 7. Enhanced reading experience Fixed-layout ePUB conversion allows you to enhance the overall reading experience, especially when images are involved.  Often, the text or images do not flow properly across e-readers, leading them to stretch out or appear out of place. Using the fixed layout ePub conversion feature, publishers can ensure that both images and text stay in place, similar to printed books, thus offering a great reading experience. 8. Add cross-references With fixed layout ePUB conversion, you can add cross-references, footnotes, annotations, and links to external websites to your content.  Further, it also allows you to use SVG images that dynamically resize to retain their definition and clarity. 9. Maintains the alignment of text and images Fixed layout ePUB conversion is a great tool for publishers as it allows them to maintain the alignment of text and images to derive meaning from the content.  Unlike the reflowable layout, which helps the content automatically adjust to the screen size being used, impacting the page’s design, fixed-layout ensures that the images properly align with the associated text. [/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”To wrap” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1646041260725{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Publishers should consider fixed-layout eBook conversion when it’s important to maintain a design that has text going over images, or they want their book to be viewed in aspect ratios. With a fixed layout, they get to preserve the printed format of the eBook, which may comprise highly complex graphical elements. Overall, fixed layout ePUB conversion is a great tool that can allow publishers to make multiple enhancements to their eBooks, including animations, text highlights, read-aloud features, or interactivity, making it much more engaging for the readers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Need to know more about our Products & Services? AI-Powered Education: Revolutionizing K-12 Learning through Robotics and AI

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With the growing importance of artificial intelligence in our daily lives, it’s no wonder that educational institutions are racing to catch up with the need to leverage intelligent systems that are helping students learn better and achieve their learning objectives. AI or Artificial intelligence – the ability of a computer program to do human tasks such as thinking and learning – is transforming the concept of both K-12 learning and higher education alike. A Technavio report about the AI market in the US education sector also predicts a nearly 48 percent growth rate for AI tools over the next three years. So, where and how does AI fit into K-12 learning? Let’s explore – Robotics and AI-based education are becoming increasingly commonplace in schools, largely due to the fact that students in K12 schools will graduate into a highly tech-driven workforce where robots will become widely used in everyday lives. Also Read: Role of Artificial Intelligence in Custom Application Development While individual use cases may vary based on context, effective robotics/AI in education can be grouped into the following general roles – Integration – AI solutions can be integrated with other tech initiatives such as IoT-driven networks and smart technology to offer personalized learning solutions for students Automation – Robotics, AI, and other technological tools can be used to automate tasks such as grading, timetable scheduling, or digital asset categorization, giving educators more time to engage with students Delineation – AI-driven analytics in education can be used to identify important trends and delineate key markers to help educators design the most effective classroom experiences Identification – Data analytics, coupled with smart and adaptive AI solutions, can help in identifying critical areas for both student and teacher performance [/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How Can Robotics and AI tools Be Used in K-12 Learning?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1684301538640{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text] 5 Ways Robotics and AI Can be Utilized in K-12 Classrooms – 1. Individualized Learning AI can be used to facilitate the application of higher levels of individualized learning through innovative and interactive learning programs. An AI-based educational system allows educators to cater to individual student needs by putting more focus into specific topics and reiterating the areas that the students have not understood clearly. AI tools also have the ability to identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses to know where they may be struggling. With this information, AI can be used to offer students the required tools they need for success. Example – Cognii’s AI-based products made for K-12 help students by employing conversational technology to guide them in open-format responses that also improve critical-thinking skills. Further, the virtual assistant also provides real-time feedback, one-on-one tutoring, and is customized to each student’s individual needs. 2. Customized Curriculum Apart from helping identify an individual student’s weaknesses, AI tools can also help determine if there are parts of the curriculum that the students are struggling with. This allows educators to take corrective measures and design a customized curriculum as per the learners’ needs. For example, if a high percentage of students in the classroom get the same question wrong, it allows the teacher to review the learning material and dive into that subject more to ensure that students get a conceptual understanding of the subject. Also, in case there are areas that are more difficult for a teacher, they can utilize supplemental AI teaching tools for better delivery of lessons. Educational robots programmed to suit each individual’s needs are another way to improve K-12 learning, especially for students with special needs. Children with autism, for example, can be supported better by robots in the learning of communication and social skills, interacting with special devices that adapt their answers and responses to students’ reactions. Example –Nuance makes speech recognition software for students and faculty. The technology can transcribe up to 160 words per minute and is especially helpful for students with limited mobility or ones who struggle with writing. 3. Easing the Workload for Teachers One of the other ways AI can be used to improve K-12 learning is by assisting teachers in mundane administrative tasks like grading assignments, thereby freeing more time to create bespoke lesson plans for each student. Instead of grading every student’s work individually, which can take up a huge amount of extra time, technology allows teachers the ability to have their students’ work automatically graded with AI tools. Example – Century Tech is a platform that utilizes data analytics and cognitive neuroscience to create personalized learning plans and reduce workloads for instructors. It is an excellent AI platform that tracks student progress, identifies knowledge gaps, and offers personal study recommendations, gives teachers access to resources, and reduces time spent on planning and grading. 4. Collect Meaningful and Immediate Feedback Besides helping educators craft lessons that are customized to individual student needs, AI tools can also help offer essential feedback to students and teachers on lessons or subjects where improvement is possible. This allows schools to monitor individual students and alert teachers on their areas of weakness. Further, AI systems can also be used to relay feedback on how to approach the concept in which the students’ weaknesses can be identified and applied together with other methods of learning for better learning outcomes. Example – Thinkster Math is an excellent tutoring program developed for use on tablets, laptops, and desktops. This K-8 platform combines AI with human interaction to provide students with custom programs. The AI technology helps in tracking work step-by-step and assisting students in understanding where they went wrong or why they are correct. 5. A Robust Technology to Attend School Educational robotics offers an innovative solution for students who cannot attend school. These robots can be used to bring into the classroom all those students who cannot attend the lessons because of their particular physical conditions. Whether the student is recovering at home after a surgery or has severe allergies restricting him/her from attending school, they can still access a real school experience through a device (personal

Helps to explain complex concepts to students Teachers can easily explain a complex theoretical concept or complex methodology using virtual lab simulations. Students also get hands-on experience due to these online science simulations in a controlled environment. With the audio-visual, immersive experience, students can get a much better understanding of real instruments, their components, and their operational interface.  3. Engages learners Virtual labs are much more interesting and engaging for students than theory classes (both online and offline) or watching videos or presentations about experiments. Online simulation for students allows teachers to capture students’ attention by allowing them to virtually participate in experiments online. Students can even perform the same experiment several times to understand a specific concept. Read About: 7 Benefits of Using Virtual Labs in K-12 Education 4. Provides unlimited lab access With the current remote learning system, students remain geographically distributed and are unable to attend classes at their institutes. But the good news is that virtual labs allow all remote students to practice their experiments online. Unlike a physical lab, where students had fixed class time to access the laboratory and perform experiments; a virtual lab can be accessed for as long as they want.  5. Affordable alternative to physical labs Setting up virtual science simulations is way more affordable than real ones, and this is also a one-time investment. There are no recurring expenses for resources and lab maintenance. Even one single lab platform is enough to serve an entire school or institution without spending a huge amount on its development. Besides, virtual labs  for schools don’t need a place or develop buildings like in the case of real laboratories, which helps save a lot of money. Read About: A holistic learning experience to K-12 students[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How can students learn better with virtual lab simulations?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1684301264922{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}” el_id=”how”][vc_column_text] 1. Refresh students’ knowledge before learning a new concept  With virtual labs, students can get enough scope to refresh their learning from time to time and keep their knowledge updated. After gaining theoretical knowledge, students can conduct virtual experiments to enhance their understanding.   2. Allows learning flexibility As virtual lab simulations offer remote learning facilities, students can take up the classes at their own time and pace. Virtual laboratories help students to perform their experiments at any time and even multiple times for better understanding. Students can even attend their virtual labs from any place at their convenience. Cloud-based virtual labs can be accessed from any device with an internet connection, which facilitates contactless remote learning. 3. Allows multiple trials without any restriction Unlike a traditional lab setup, in virtual labs, students get the redo option and can conduct the same experiment multiple times. Thanks to this feature, students can go over their mistakes, find out and understand where they went wrong, and give it another shot immediately. 4. Reduces hazards and risk As virtual labs offer interactive screen experiments, students don’t need to be stressed about the hazardous results when something goes wrong. Virtual lab simulations allow students to enjoy performing experiments in a safe environment and get computerized results. Even complex chemistry experiments can be conducted without any difficulty or hazards. The availability of graphics and page composition programs makes design work much easier and faster. With digital processing, accomplishing the page layout is no more a strenuous job. It is possible to send and exchange documents electronically, eliminating time and costs of physical delivery.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Digital prepress process requirements” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1643261378715{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]In digital processing, the electronic outputs are usually in the form of PDFs or application files with different file sizes and file types, which may impact the effectiveness of the digital prepress, and therefore, it is prudent to utilize a trained prepress technician to provide competent results, quickly and efficiently. The digital prepress processes The digital prepress process usually starts immediately after the word manuscripts are submitted to the prepress company. Let us have a look at the processes that follow. Copyediting: This is to ensure consistency in the written work, making sure the content is fair and sensible, and refining the content without altering the original intent. This process also includes formatting the content to publisher’s house style using customized publisher-specific automation tools and services offered by clients. Know more about Copyediting.  Typesetting: This involves creating a proof, that is, designing a layout using one of the leading design applications, for example, Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, ArborText (3B2), to name a few. The correction cycle includes image retouching, for which Adobe Photoshop is the leading application. Also read, what is typesetting and why it is important.  Proofreading: This is the penultimate step taken before a document is published. Formatting and typographical errors are checked. This step also ensures the document adheres to the design/layout style guide. Here are the top tips on proofreading.  Digital structuring of the content: The last step is to structure the text for final display. This is done using Markup language, which is a means to give instructions about the layout of how the text of the document or book will be displayed. Pre-flighting: Before finished pages go through the remaining processes, a validation is done to check whether all the data meet the necessary printer requirements. Creating high-quality print files: This is the process of creating a high-resolution PDF that meets all the specifications to produce a high-quality print. Digital prepress checklist: The sequence of procedures followed in a digital prepress collectively constitutes a workflow. Each workflow process is unique with the preferred use of technologies. Whatever the workflow is, the bottom line is that each and every step of the process has to be carefully managed, which requires collective participation and coordination from each of the digital prepress processes mentioned. [/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”In conclusion:” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1643261392590{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Digital prepress has become the preferred choice for publishers to print on demand. In fact, the market share of digital printing has almost doubled over the last decade. 5 Reasons Why Enterprises Need to be WCAG Compliant

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Businesses aim for legal compliance in order to avoid any run-ins with the law. In addition to the usual compliance processes followed by a company, such as GDPR, workplace safety, HIPAA, POSH, etc., WCAG compliance at workplaces are also equally important. It ensures that not just their customers, but also their employees with physical disabilities are able to access their websites and IT systems without difficulty. Back in the day, when the ADA was newly formed, the term “places of public accommodation” referred to any place where people would typically gather to participate in society. But in view of digitization and its global effects, places of accommodation are no longer limited to a physical space. It also includes virtual spaces, where people tend to connect far more often. Therefore, there is a need for every business organization, whether big or small, to have web content that is accessible to all. Not only because it is a legal requirement, but because it is nice to be considerate and compassionate towards people. Today, every business organization should be asking themselves, “Is our website accessible?” Related Read: Difference between WCAG, Section 508 and ADA – Tools of Web Accessibility[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Here are some reasons why enterprises must ensure WCAG compliance:” font_container=”tag:h1|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1596807768119{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text] 1. Have a User-Friendly Web Presence Globally, around 10% of the world’s population (650 million people) live with a disability. By ensuring that your web content has all the images tagged properly and is able to support a screen reader, people with complete or partial vision or hearing impairment, physical disability and so on will be able to access and navigate through the site without any trouble. Improving the UX of your website is important to retain your audience. Many times, people simply move on to other more accessible sites rather than filing a complaint. And through word of mouth, others too will follow them, and you will see your website audience dwindling. And more often than not, these are customers who can contribute to your revenue, but couldn’t, because your website didn’t allow them to. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, people with disabilities have $220 billion in discretionary spending power. Also See: 5 Things to Bear in Mind While Designing for Accessibility 2. Reach Out to New Demographics 71% of disabled customers with access needs will click away from a website that they find difficult to use. And 82% of customers with access needs would spend more if websites were more accessible. Conforming to the WCAG guidelines doesn’t require much effort, any vendor can do it for you. But lack of it will cost you a whole demography that could have been reached out to if only the website was more accessible. So, in a way, you are driving out potential revenue. Accessibility also builds brand loyalty. When people know your website isn’t accessible on the first try, they aren’t coming back again to check. On the contrary, having an accessible website will help you reach out to newer user base who previously could not access online content. 3. Create an Inclusive Work Environment With a lot of businesses practically working only through digital channels, it makes sense to have a site that is accessible to as many people as possible. Your website will be accessed not only by your customers, but also your employees.  The scope of diversity should also be broadened to include people with a wide range of disabilities. And no, just building a wheelchair accessible ramp doesn’t end an organization’s responsibility of creating an inclusive work environment. In order to create an inclusive work environment, it is imperative that all employees are able to use and manage the digital content equally. 4. Avoid Litigations The number of website accessibility lawsuits is increasing at a rapid rate, with many high-profile companies being included in the defaulters list. There have been many instances in the past where non-conformance to WCAG accessibility guidelines have led to serious litigations against companies, leading to penalty and loss of reputation. In order to avoid such a scenario, it is best to take necessary actions and make the site usable for all. If you think creating an accessible website is expensive, think about the money you would have to shell out in lawsuit damages. 5. Improve SEO SEO and accessibility are interlinked in a way that creating an accessible website will automatically help boost your SEO ranking. This is because assistive technologies and search engines both require a great content structure, semantics and functionality. This is achieved by using proper alt text tags for images, providing descriptive link text, avoiding empty headers and so on. Undertaking these measures serves the dual intention of keeping your website users as well as search engines satisfied. If you can make Google believe in the content and the user experience that your page will provide to site visitors, irrespective of their capabilities, the chances of ranking higher is more likely.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1597058917101{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;background-color: #dee7f0 !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1597058667516{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 20px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;}”][vc_column_text]White paper: WCAG – The Road to Making Businesses Accessible [/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1597058963301{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-right: 20px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;}”][button size=”mediumlarge_rd_bt” use_icon=”yes” t_color=”#ffffff” b_color=”#f55744″ t_hover_color=”#ffffff” b_hover_color=”#3ac77f” url=”https://stag.hurix.com/whitepapers/wcag-the-road-to-making-businesses-accessible/” target=”yes” position=”ta_right” icon=”wb-download”]Download Now![/button][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”Given below are some ways to make your website accessible:” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1596808130267{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text] The headers and text should stand out against the background of the site Provide a minimum color contrast ratio for non-text content of 3:1 The contrast between text and its background should be 5:1 and more Add alt tags and descriptions for images, videos, and animation Write clear, concise content Use translations if your business offers international services Ensure your site works without CSS Allow users to turn off video/GIF content Use text descriptions for hyperlinks Make forms accessible using HTML tags to

3 Types of Copy Editing that Make it a Core Editorial Service

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]All authors and researchers want their work to be published in a readable and easy-to-understand manner, reaching both the experts in the field as well as aspiring researchers.  However, not all researchers are well-versed writers, and therefore every publishing company has copy editing as a mandatory editorial service in their publishing process.  Traditionally, the copy editor would read a printed or written manuscript, manually edit the content for the correctness and mark their corrections using copy editing language symbols for consistency. Nowadays, with the evolution of digital technology, copy editors edit the content in a word document or in a PDF with the ‘track changes’ feature. Editing the content in online platforms directly is the new scope of enhancement in this field. Copy editing, which is the core process in an editorial service, includes analysis of the input, creation of style sheets, amendment of styles, language editing and polishing, and editorial proofreading before the content is being sent for the next process.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Who is a Copy Editor?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1682315418819{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]In modern terminology, a copy editor is the grammatical gatekeeper of the publishing world. Besides an outstanding command of the language, copy editors need a broad sense of general knowledge, a knack for spotting errors, good critical thinking skills in order to recognize inconsistencies or vagueness, attention to detail, a sense of style and interpersonal skills for dealing with writers, other editors and designers. They must also set priorities and balance a desire for perfection with the need to meet deadlines. Across the industry, copy editing comprises of the following processes: Pre-editing/style tagging Style editing Language editing Each of the processes is interlinked and sequential. Pre-editing/Style tagging Pre-editing is the initial process in copy-editing a module. The raw manuscript is checked for unwanted spaces and breaks, followed by applying tags to the manuscript. The references are set as per the in-house publisher’s style with regard to punctuation and placement of different elements, such as Author/editor group Publication year Title Journal/book names Volume and issue numbers Page range Publisher details Conference information Citations are cross-linked with the references/tables/figures, and any unlisted and uncited references are identified, with appropriate queries raised to the authors. Style editing Style editing is the process of checking the piece of work for consistency in accordance with the publisher’s in-house style. The elements checked in this stage include- Abbreviations and acronyms Casing of titles Head levels Captions Spelling Hyphenation Punctuation Quotations Numerals and units Emphasis significance like bold and italics Word preferences based on publisher Typos/syntax Lists Extracts Equations and more Language editing Language editing involves editing the content by reorganizing or restructuring a document. Checking the content for subject-verb agreement is the key to this task. This task also involves identifying any inconsistent parts of the content as well as any variances and correcting them without changing the author’s intent.  In any case, the approval of the author for any change is sought in the form of a query. The vague sentences are fixed by either rewriting the content or editing it. However, any passages that seem difficult to understand or inappropriate will be sent to the author to rewrite, so as to avoid infringing upon the author’s intent and changing the meaning. Categories of copy editing Every publisher categorizes copy editing into the following three elements: Light editing: Involves checking for the subject and verb agreement, spelling and typos. Medium editing: Identifying and correcting inconsistent parts of the vague sentences and rephrasing. Heavy editing: Involves rewriting the content by heavily editing the text without altering the author’s voice. Based on the requirement of the publisher, the above-mentioned tasks are performed. Is Fluid Layout Better Than Fixed Layout?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Fluid layout versus fixed layout – which one is better? The question has plagued publishers for years and there is still no clear answer. Both layouts have their pros and cons but the final decision should depend on the eBook usability. Ideally, before designing an eBook, the publishers must consider the following: Browser choice Screen resolution Whether or not to maximize the browser Extra toolbars open in the browser, for instance, bookmarks, history etc. The operating system and hardware With these factors in mind, the article discusses the pros and cons of both the fluid layout and the fixed layout. Before delving into the difference between the two, it is first important to understand both types of layouts. [/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”What is a Fixed Layout?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1681977037358{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}” el_id=”what”][vc_column_text]Fixed layout, also known as static layout, is an outline with fixed width, measured in pixels. As the name suggests, the layout is programmed to be fixed. So no matter what the screen size or resolution, the width of the elements will remain the same. In other words, the viewing experience of the users will remain the same across all device types be it computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet.  Most fixed layout eBooks use a width of 960 px based on the assumption that readers browse in 1024×768 resolution or higher. Most publishers prefer fixed layout primarily because it is easier to make from print files. And then there is this sense of assurance that the users see the design the same way as the publisher does. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the fixed layout. Also Read: How ePUB Solutions Streamline Large Scale Digital Publishing Projects a) Pros – Fixed Layout The width of a fixed layout is measured in pixels, which makes the layouts easier to use and customize in terms of design. Width remains the same on all browser types and so the layout provides a uniform viewing experience of all elements in the layout – images, video, forms or any other type of content. There is no concept of minimum or maximum width. Normally, the standard width is 960 px; however, even if the layout is made for the smallest screen resolution, that is, 800×600 px, the content will be easily readable even at a larger resolution. b) Cons – Fixed Layout Since the layout is fixed, readers on small screens will have to use the horizontal scroll bar, which breaks the reading experience. The layout may result in excessive white spaces in case of large screen resolution, upsetting the balance and other design principles. There has to be a seamless continuation of patterns, textures, and images to ensure a smooth viewing experience on screens with larger resolutions. Fixed layouts score low on usability especially when the content is viewed on different screen sizes. In a fluid layout, the width is measured in percentages instead of pixels. The benefit is that when screen size changes, for instance from the laptop to the smartphone, the proportion of elements remains unchanged. Unlike a fixed layout, the view is adjusted for each reader. However, like the fixed layout, the fluid layout too has its pros and cons. a) Pros – Fluid Layout A fluid layout is more user-friendly in that it adjusts itself to the viewer’s screen size. So if you are viewing the content on a small screen, for example, a mobile phone, then you don’t have to scroll horizontally to read the content. The white space remains the same no matter what the screen size or the browser. As a result, the visual experience is more appealing. A fluid layout provides an optimal viewing experience. An added bonus is that this layout also loads pretty fast because there is not much adjustment that has to be made in the size and position of the elements when they are loaded. b) Cons – Fluid Layout A fluid layout requires more effort than a fixed layout and this is one reason why publishers prefer a fixed layout. In a fixed layout what the  Publisher sees is what the readers get. However, in the case of the fluid layout, the publisher has less control over what the user sees and so they may overlook certain aspects simply because the page looks fine on their specific screen resolutions. All content types such as images and videos have to be set at multiple widths to accommodate different types of screen resolutions. Given the very large screen resolution, a lack of content could end up creating excessive white space which would ruin the viewing experience. While the layout flows to fit the user’s screen size, it is very difficult to design a perfectly fluid layout. The problem becomes all the more compounded when you have images or videos that should remain fixed in size on all browser types and screen sizes. Mobile Learning – Teachers Talk Tech

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]That’s no secret that an increasing number of individuals nowadays use smartphones to access the Internet. Even though desktops and laptops are still popular, having many gadgets has become common, and utilizing them for various purposes rather than just sticking with one. Nowadays, our hands are hooked to our smartphones. We utilize it for every purpose, like getting in touch with loved ones, buying online, placing food orders, playing games, etc. Mobile learning is the use of mobile devices to access educational materials. The central attraction of mobile learning is its emphasis on the learner’s mobility; by allowing them to decide when and where they want to learn, and they may also do it at their own speed, which boosts interest and information retention. If we examine the statistics of users of different websites, we can see that the majority of those who access public information from various websites do so via mobile gadgets. When it comes to participants taking classes or courses, there is nearly an equal split between participants using mobile and desktop devices.  Mobile learning platforms in corporate education provide a chance to reach its members who are always on the go, operating remotely, or choosing to complete their training outside of regular business hours by not using their desktops. We all are quite familiar with the benefits of digital learning for workforce development, but how can we make the most of it? Here are the key recommendations we have for developing a successful and impactful mobile learning plan. Make the start simple – In 3-4 clicks, the learners will analyze whether the mobile learning platform is worthwhile. Seamless learning, which provides learners with immediate access to learning content without logging in, minimizes friction across the whole onboarding process and makes it simple to restart learning once logged in. Create your mobile learning with mobile – Consider how you and the learners will use mobile devices in order to create an engaging and successful mlearning experience. You may make an interface that is simple to use and intuitive by emulating the activities that they are used to from their favorite apps. Use video footage/content – We use YouTube videos more often than textbooks these days for a reason: our brains are 95% better at processing information when it is given in video format. If you wish to replicate short video clips we’re used to consuming on social media, try introducing video into your mobile learning content with a personal greeting from the company’s Managing Director or CEO, a safety tutorial, or a “day in the life” type ride along. Explore with gamification – Gaming elements, such as scores, accomplishments, and chances to “leveling up,” make an experience for users more enjoyable. Businesses that include gamification aspects in their training really report a 60% boost in engagement and a 50% increase in productivity. Use a light-hearted, conversational tone – Most individuals get nervous when they hear the phrase “corporate training.” Use a conversational tone in your mobile learning application to disprove this misconception since it is more engaging, makes learning seem less like a “job,” and it fits better in a more comfortable environment. Some uses of mobile learning in corporate education are the following: Sharing learning content for mobile consumption The most common usage of mobile learning is this. You may share your learning materials with your participants so they can study on their mobile devices at their own pace after developing them. It’s simple to distribute the information by email or texting link. This mobile learning strategy prioritizes more on personal consumption. Discussions in between lessons Mobile devices can also be used as part of a blended learning method. Instructors may ask questions during in-person training, and learners may reply by completing a survey on their smartphones. The trainer can accomplish this by emailing participants a link to the survey or even making a QR code that is simple to scan with a smartphone camera. Quick feedback is possible, which is incredibly helpful when training large groups of people. Advantages and Disadvantages of Mlearning Digital gadgets have been a part of the millennial generation’s upbringing. Therefore, mlearning is designed to fit the patterns and routines of millennials. But mobile learning offers so many benefits that all ages may make use of it. So now, let’s look at some of Mlearning’s advantages. Millennials adore mobile devices Better Efficiency Easily Accessible Extremely Interesting Cost-effectiveness Encourages Continuous Usage Enhances Employee Retention Now, some of the disadvantages of mlearning are: Distraction Technical Barrier Internet Connectivity Issues Screen too small Expertise Our lives have been profoundly transformed by technology in ways we could never have imagined, and it is going to be more in the coming years. Mobile devices have an impact on how we live our daily lives, even if they have their pros and cons. As these gadgets’ capabilities and performance grow, so does their potential to help to learn. These kinds of developments help to foster new learning environments and increase trainee engagement. In the next five years, you will be able to witness the beneficial effects engaged workers have on your company. They will be performing wonders that you can’t imagine. Or what is its significance, especially in the training and development industry? In this article, we will explore answers to some questions like these. Table of Contents: What is Digital Transformation? How is Digital Transformation Related to Business Transformation? Why do Digital Transformations Fail? What is Digital Transformation?   Digital transformation is the use of technology (which may be of any sort) to help you improve your business by making your people and processes more productive, efficient, and effective. The technology used for digital transformation in businesses can be in the form of: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system (used to manage day-to-day business operations Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software (used to manage sales and interactions with existing and prospective customers)  Financial and Accounting software  Automation software (used to automate some manufacturing processes)  Robotics, and so on How is Digital Transformation Related to Business Transformation? Although technology is a crucial driver for some of these transformations, digital transformation is more about business transformation as organizations are trying to: Improve efficiency Provide a better customer experience Ease the work of their employees, and so on Why do Digital Transformations Fail? Despite many promising technologies, organizations often struggle to achieve their goals related to digital transformations. This is because, although we have made significant advancements on the technology side over the last few decades, we still need to address the business transformation side.  When we neglect the business processes, the organization, and the people side, we neglect the complete digital transformation. Unless we address people and business in a way better than the technology (we have invested in), there are high chances of failure of the complete digital transformation exercise.  Hence, it is essential that companies invest enough in people and processes, and not just the underlying technology.  How to Increase the Productivity of Employees Using Digital Transformation? Challenges of Designing and Developing Effective Enterprise Training

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In today’s rapidly changing business landscape, continual upskilling and reskilling are critical factors in the success of any enterprise. It is no longer enough to hire skilled professionals and expect them to perform at their best. Instead, companies must invest in training programs that equip their employees with the knowledge and skills required to adapt to new technologies, industry trends, and customer demands. However, designing and developing effective enterprise training is easier said than done. In this article, we will explore some of the most common challenges around designing and developing effective training and the ways to address those challenges. Table of Content: Embarking your training journey Tips to address the challenges Embarking on your training design & development journey: what to expect Anyone who has been part of learning & development in organizations large or small will have come across at least a few or all of the following challenges.  1. Lack of Personalized Content One of the biggest challenges in designing and developing effective enterprise training is the lack of personalized content. Many organizations rely on a one-size-fits-all approach to training, and all available resources are generic in nature. Training designed based on such generic information leads to low engagement and poor learning outcomes. Personalization is critical in ensuring that employees receive the training they need to succeed in their roles. Personalized training can be tailored to the specific needs and skill levels of individual employees, improving engagement and retention of key concepts. 2. Insufficient Time Learning & development departments are usually lean and are the single point of contact for all learning & development activities, which places a strain on their time. Typically, training programs must be launched within a time frame defined by the business verticals they serve. Time is always precious, and learning projects with a relaxed timeframe are rare.  3. Limited Resources Limited resources can also be a significant challenge for organizations when designing and developing effective enterprise training. Organizations must balance the need for training with the cost of developing and delivering the training program. This challenge makes many organizations to look for cost-effective training solutions, such as e-learning platforms that offer generic, off-the-shelf courses relevant to employees across different enterprises. For more specific learning needs, organizations partner with external training providers to access the expertise and resources needed to design and develop effective training programs. 4. Lack of Employee Engagement Lack of employee engagement is another challenge to address when designing and developing enterprise training. Many employees view training as a chore and may not be fully engaged in the learning process. This can lead to poor learning outcomes and a lack of enthusiasm for future training opportunities.  5. Unclear Measurable Outcomes Another challenge in designing effective enterprise training is insufficient information required  to define measurable outcomes. The lack of time and resources typically results in courses that are put together in a hurry, based on some raw content that is not based on clearly defined, measurable outcomes. This has a direct impact on the quality and effectiveness of the training program designed.  Organizations need to be able to measure the impact of their training programs to determine their effectiveness and ROI. And that is not possible without clearly defined measurable outcomes of the training.  Tips to address these challenges 1. Define the Objectives  Collaborate with the functional leaders to understand the nature of their function and the performance gap they wish to close. This will help you define measurable training goals and objectives. The training goals and objectives must align with the organization’s overall strategy and be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Failure to define clear goals and objectives can lead to a lack of focus, confusion among employees, and a lack of motivation to participate in the training program. 2. Address the Diverse Learning Needs of Employees Not all employees learn in the same way, and some may prefer hands-on training while others prefer to learn through self-paced online courses. Offer a range of training methods and modalities to cater to different needs and preferences. 3. Deliver Training Content that is Engaging and Relevant Delivering training content that is engaging and relevant is crucial to the success of any training program. Training content that is dry, boring, or irrelevant to an employee’s job function is unlikely to be effective. Ensure that your training content is up-to-date, relevant to the job function, and delivered in an engaging way to capture the attention of employees. 4. Provide Consistent and Ongoing Training Training is not a one-time event. It is an ongoing process that requires consistent and ongoing efforts. Provide consistent training to their employees to reinforce their knowledge and skills, and to keep them up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies. 5. Measure the Effectiveness of Training Develop metrics to measure the impact of your training program on employee performance, productivity, and job satisfaction. Failure to measure the effectiveness of training can lead to a lack of accountability and a failure to identify areas for improvement. In conclusion, enterprise training is critical to the success of any organization, and designing and developing effective training programs is not an easy task. Companies must define clear goals and objectives, meet the diverse learning needs of employees, deliver engaging and relevant training content, provide consistent and ongoing training, and measure the effectiveness of training to ensure that their employees have the skills and knowledge required to succeed in a rapidly changing business environment. By addressing these challenges, companies can create effective training programs that drive organizational success.
