Role of Technology in Higher Education Curriculum Development

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For any educational institution, the curriculum is the roadmap for both teachers and learners. Curriculum development is a crucial aspect of making a course valuable to learners. It is the framework that provides the foundation to achieve a larger learning goal through suitable teaching methods, learning strategies, and instructional materials. Curriculum development is vital for the selection and organization of appropriate learning material and other activities so that learners can acquire the core competencies of a course. It helps teachers to choose their teaching approach and helps learners to achieve their goals and objectives. So, it is imperative to know what is the role of technology in delivering the curriculum. While creating the perfect curriculum for students, instructional designers, and educators also need to factor in the role of technology in curriculum delivery in the field of education. Digital learning is the preferred mode of learning for today’s tech-savvy generation. Therefore, higher education institutions are considering the role of technology in delivering curriculum and incorporating digital technology to make their curriculum more relatable and engaging. [/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Importance of curriculum development in education” font_container=”tag:h1|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1616502361467{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text] Organized path to acquire knowledge: The main purpose of the curriculum is to provide an achievable learning framework that helps students to acquire knowledge. To make the wide spectrum of knowledge acquirable and understandable for learners, educational institutions have divided it into subjects and organized them in an engaging learning model. Determining the structure of content: All subject matter needs to be represented in an acquirable form to the learners according to their learning capability. The development of a curriculum helps in determining the structure of the subject matter for a particular level of teaching. Defining instructional methods: Curriculum development helps to determine a student-centric instructional method that makes the subject interesting to the learners. Development of knowledge, skill, and attitude: A curriculum provides the framework for developing knowledge and skills along with enhancing creative ability. Incorporating technology in the curriculum offers a dynamic as well as collaborative learning experience to students. For the tech-savvy Gen Z students, technology means not only quick access to a broad spectrum of knowledge, but also an interesting way of learning.   The use of technology in higher education such as digital learning platforms and interactive multimedia is already improving classroom engagement and educational outcomes. Implementing interactive learning features, quizzes, simulations, gamification, and so on in an educational curriculum can improve the motivation, performance, and achievements of learners. Higher education institutions must focus on creating a need-based curriculum for students, with the help of smart education apps and AI-based programs. Embedding technology in the educational curriculum can help students learn in a better and effective manner.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How to develop a curriculum for tech-savvy students” font_container=”tag:h3|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1616505788515{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]In the present scenario, when textbooks are getting replaced by laptops or tablets, and backboards are giving way to smart boards, it has become essential to reform the curriculum for tech-savvy students and develop a new curriculum that embeds digital technologies. Many higher education institutions now realize the potential role of information technology in curriculum collaborating with IT and software organizations to develop smart learning apps and tools to integrate technologies into their curriculum. The aim is to provide students with instant access to a wide spectrum of knowledge and various types of learning materials. Some of the changes that higher education institutions can incorporate when it comes to developing a curriculum for tech-savvy students are: Developing and providing eLearning content Developing learning videos and audiobooks Incorporation of  online lectures and interactive lessons for flipped learning Leveraging simulation and gamification to make the learning process engaging Use of learning software for better understanding Use of course management software for better collaboration Implementation of online collaboration and broadcasting tools to make the courses accessible from anywhere Adoption of cloud-based applications (such as – Learning management system) for the better learning experience For online or hybrid higher education programs, it is essential to have all study materials available online. Many institutions have already incorporated measures to facilitate a digitized learning infrastructure, such as the preparation of a course outline with due dates, planning of assignments for evaluation of learners’ knowledge, creation of online quizzes, and so on. In short, the implementation of technology in the curriculum needs the collaborative effort of all teaching facilitators, institutional heads, and governing bodies. Some educational institutions are already using advanced technologies to improve the student learning experience. For instance, Temple University has implemented a chatbot to answer common and frequently asked questions by students. With a thoughtful and seamless integration of technology in the curriculum, students will not only have a better learning experience, but the role of teachers will also evolve. Effective technology integration in the learning process will change classroom dynamics. Today’s tech-savvy students are comfortable with smart campus concepts, where they can freely interact with smart devices and accumulate knowledge whenever and wherever they want. To facilitate this concept of active learning, educators prepare online lectures and interactive lessons (Flipped Classrooms concept) that students can access anytime. Similarly, Active Learning Forum is one of the collaborative distance learning platforms on which both the educators and students virtually collaborate, and participate in a face-to-face learning process like a regular classroom, but all interactions occur remotely. Institutes like the University of Minnesota and North Carolina State University have been successful at running Active Learning Classrooms to facilitate learning activities. All these approaches are meant to make the learning experience more engaging for the tech-savvy generation. Several higher education institutions are currently focusing on the importance of technology and curriculum, and finding new ways to incorporate

A Comprehensive 7-Step Process to Design a Competency-Based Curriculum

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Let’s start with what is competency-based curriculum! Competency-based learning is a well-known approach to education that primarily focuses on the student’s demonstration of their desired learning outcomes as central to the overall learning process. It is largely based on the premise of a student’s progression through the curriculum (as their competencies are proven) at their speed, pace, depth, and other similar parameters. Rather than just focusing on what learners are expected to learn in terms of traditionally defined subject content, a competency-based model of curriculum design emphasizes the various complex outcomes of a learning process such as skills, knowledge, and attitudes to be applied by learners. The process of competency-based curriculum design typically involves the following steps – 1. Development or identification of general competencies The first step in developing this kind of curriculum is to identify and map the general competency areas using a wide range of sources of information and techniques to collect them. These competencies offer a framework based on specific performance outcomes to develop a curriculum and measure performance. The sources you can use include subject matter experts, high-performing students, educators, online textbooks, articles, and other resources. The techniques that you can use include focus groups, surveys, readings, and observations.  Although each student has their own unique set of competencies, in general, these competency maps are created by observing and interviewing top-performing students so that their performance can be captured as a list of core competencies (knowledge and abilities). 2. Organizing competencies into specific themes  In the next step, you have to define specific competencies in each general area. Developing an accurate and precise description will make the next steps much easier in the process of curriculum development.  To be able to fully define a competency, reflect thoroughly on its composing elements. For instance, for public speaking, consider both delivery (body language, voice) and content (language, persuasion, organization). At this point, also consider the following questions to help you frame your goals around a competency-based curriculum – What are the broad advantages of competency-based learning and why are these important? What are the specific benefits it can offer your institution? What are some of the unique goals of your institution around this? How will you measure the success of this initiative for your institution? What is the content required to support the development of the specific competency in the curriculum? What are the instructional strategies and methods that are most effective in developing the competency? 3. Establishing criteria for performance For each of the competencies, create the standards or rubrics by which you can measure the competence. Make sure to describe several levels that define positive and negative competence at this step. This will help you gauge the effectiveness of the curriculum and find out what works well and what doesn’t for the learners. 4. Creating learning experiences Once you have defined competencies and criteria for outcomes, think about how students will demonstrate these skills via learning experiences. There are multiple ways to demonstrate these skills, so make sure that the products of the assessment – the students’ work – are varied and interesting. The ideal way to recognize a competency-based learning experience is to thoroughly look at the work the students produce and the learning environment in which they produce it. For instance, teachers and students use the identified competencies and outcomes to engage in regular, open reflection on learning. The idea here is to empower students to be real learning designers. Allow them to use the rubric to design a learning experience where they can demonstrate the learning outcomes and give them the responsibility of the planning, execution, and presentation of their work for assessment.  5. Assessing competency A successful competency-based curriculum will enable students to apply and execute knowledge, skills, and abilities desired by the industry in general.  To bridge this gap between industry and academia, there is a need for a structured process of connecting KSAs to assessment. When assessing competencies, you need to address two important questions including –  Have the students acquired the specified competencies by the end of the program? If yes, was this acquisition of the competencies a result of the program? You need a variety of assessment methods here for assessing the program-level competencies including formative and summative assessments as well as self-assessment. 6. Evaluating the effectiveness of the curriculum As the curriculum gets implemented and students begin to develop their competence in various areas, there will be a lot of likely changes. It is, therefore, important to evaluate the curriculum’s efficacy to deliver competence, refine it to better meet the desired goals, and then repeat the process to ensure ongoing effectiveness.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”In conclusion” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1616739767161{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]A relatively modern approach to learning design, competency-based learning is gaining rapid popularity among educational institutions since it shows a definite improvement in job-oriented skills for students.  By identifying the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary for achieving success in any industry or occupation the students choose to pursue, the approach can be used to develop and evaluate a competency-based curriculum. It ensures that students are better prepared to face work-related challenges later in life. Apart from helping students develop and demonstrate mastery over a topic, a competency-based curriculum also builds a

Tips For Proofreading

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Irrespective of your writing field or genre of expertise, proofreading is an important skill to master as a writer. It primarily refers to the process of examining your text carefully to find and correct various typographical errors and other mistakes in spelling, grammar, style, etc. In this article, we explore various key aspects of proofreading and give you some tips to effectively proofread your own content. How Does Proofreading Work? Experienced and professional proofreaders typically have their own style and process for effectively proofreading documents, and this can vary based on many factors, including the type of document to be proofread. However, in general, some of the things to keep in mind before you proofread your documents include Make sure to revise the larger aspects of your text – First and foremost, don’t jump to make corrections at the sentence and word level if you feel there is still a need to work on aspects such as organization, focus and development of the entire piece, or of the paragraphs/sections.  Remember to eliminate unnecessary words before looking for mistakes – Conduct thorough research and learn how to write short, clear, and direct sentences before you try to proofread and look for errors in the text. Clearly know what to look for – Before you start proofreading, make a comprehensive list of mistakes you need to watch out for. Top Tips for Proofreading Effectively Although there can be different methodologies that each proofreader may use, there are certain common things that all of them need to keep in mind. Below are some of the top tips that can help make the overall job of proofreading easier and quicker for you: 1. Always approach the text in sections   When you proofread your text, you mustn’t read it straight through. Instead, the best way is to start by focusing on the headings first, followed by the paragraphs, tables, and figures. The ideal approach here is to read different text sections out of order. Once done, reading the entire piece through should be the final step of the process. 2. Take a printout of the text and review the hard copy  While this may not be feasible for every document, reviewing the hard copy makes a lot of sense when you do your final proofreading round. This is simply because reading on paper allows you to catch errors faster compared to reading on a computer screen, where you might miss out on a lot of them. You might also like to read: 3 Types of Copy Editing that Make it a Core Editorial Service 3. Take a break from the text and stay consistent  One of the other important things you need to keep in mind while proofreading is to never finish writing a text and then straightaway begin proofreading. Always take a break of at least several hours or days to approach the text with a fresh set of eyes. Further, make sure to be always consistent if you make changes to a word, sentence, punctuation mark, phrase, etc., to ensure that the change you made is uniformly reflected throughout the entire text. 4. Review the draft in stages One of the other best proofreading strategies is to approach your proofreading and editing tasks separately. Make sure to begin with structural editing by assessing the accuracy of the overall flow and clarity of your message. At this stage, you can also make significant changes by adding or deleting various sections of text. The next step in the process is line editing, where the focus should be on revising each line to communicate your ideas clearly. After line editing, the next step should be to proceed with copy-editing, which involves polishing your sentences to ensure correct grammar and syntax. The last stage here is proofreading, where you carefully check for remaining errors like misspelled words or misused punctuation. 5. Read aloud and review spellchecking settings before you begin Often, it is way easier to catch errors in the text when you hear what you read. Besides, reading the content aloud while proofreading can also help you stay focused. Apart from this, also make sure to review your spell check settings before you start. This allows you to select which errors you would like the program to focus on and which ones to avoid.  6. Be sure of the language and citation style This is another important area to focus on while proofreading your text. Be sure of the language and citation style your content needs to be in. For instance, Should it be in American English or British English? Are all of the citations used in the text correctly formatted? Have you checked citation formatting against an online citation generator? 7. Make use of the “find and replace all” function There are several documents or content pieces where if an error has been made once, it has been made or done throughout the text. This makes it necessary to find and use the “find and replace all” function so whenever you come across such an error, you can make corrections faster, thus saving you a great deal of time and effort. 8. Do not rely on spellchecking programs While spellcheckers can be of immense help for editors and proofreaders, it is not wise to depend on them to do the entire proofreading job for you. This is simply because spell checkers, in most cases, will not pick up on minor issues such as words that are used incorrectly (to vs. too vs. two, etc.). Additionally, if you are copy editing an article that incorporates foreign language terms, it would be hard for spellcheckers to distinguish errors properly. To Conclude Proofreading can be a challenging and tedious task for anyone reviewing their own work. Following the tips mentioned above makes it much easier for you to come up with an error-free copy of your text. Additionally, you can also hire professional proofreading services if you wish to strictly adhere to a particular style or format,

How to Leverage Technology to Improve Student eLearning Outcomes

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Technology has impacted all aspects of our lives, and education is one of them. One of the advantages of technology in education is that it can bring real-world problems into the classroom for students to understand and solve. It can also create virtual and simulated environments in which students can learn by doing or exploring concepts without any adverse repercussions. Over the years, schools have made efforts to incorporate real-world context in classroom teaching through field visits, lab experiments, etc. However, activity-based contextual learning has never been at the heart of an academic curriculum in the traditional classroom setting, primarily because of logistical constraints. eLearning is a powerful means to address these constraints. Digital technologies such as videos, computer simulations, and electronic communication make learning fun, practical, engaging, and immersive. Interactive eLearning modules are emerging as a popular means to redefine education, enabling students to learn at their own pace, practice skills, and gain real-life perspectives.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Here’s how higher education institutions can leverage technology to improve student eLearning outcomes.” font_container=”tag:h1|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1630737070445{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Simulations and 3D models As students, we have all experienced how difficult it is to grasp certain concepts especially in subjects like Math and Science. Digital simulations and 3D models can improve students’ understanding of these concepts. Technology can give shape to abstract concepts, put them into context so students not only understand the concepts but also see first-hand how they can use them in real-life situations. For instance, when they learn about geometry, they can see, understand and experience that its use is not just restricted to mathematics but that it is also integral to various art forms. Know more, how does realistic simulation can enhance K-12 learning.  Teaching aids Technology also provides a much-needed helping hand to teachers who find it difficult to explain certain things within the limits of the classroom. For instance, teaching the difference between grasslands, savanna, and a prairie. With technology, it is possible to add eLearning modules that take students to a virtual visit of these lands, allowing them to ‘see’ and identify the differences between these landforms, rather than memorizing from the textbook.  Collaboration tools Communication is an integral aspect of any activity and more so of any educational activity. Students learn by doing, they also learn by interaction with the instructor and peers. Technology has helped to bridge communication gaps and ensure a smooth flow of knowledge.  Instructors can use collaboration tools to form communities where they can interact with students, assign projects, resolve doubts, etc. Today, as most of the learning is taking place in a remote environment, these collaboration tools help students to connect with their peers across geographies and learn together. Advanced research Incorporating technology in education helps to shift responsibility and control over learning from the teacher to the students. To improve the students’ eLearning outcomes, instructors can assign projects that require learners to research and build their case for a particular topic. Once the students have collated the information, they can present their research to the entire class. The advantages are two-fold: first, the students own their learning, and second, they advance their research skills and learn to incorporate information and knowledge in their projects. Interactive assessments There are various software available that allows instructors to assign assessments and receive responses in real-time. Besides, tracking, analysis, and reporting tools can be used to glean insights into each student’s progress, and also the effectiveness of each lesson. The analytical report also helps teachers understand what further efforts are required to achieve improved eLearning outcomes. Flexible learning eLearning modules allow students to learn at their own pace. In textbook-based learning, students are more likely to skip over a concept if it isn’t clear to them. However, missing one step in a ladder breaks the entire journey. Then there may be students who take more time to absorb a certain idea. With eLearning courses that are always available to them on digital devices, they can go through the lessons as many times as they want, taking time to thoroughly understand concepts. Technology is therefore a great leveler, allowing students to progress at their own pace and improve their eLearning outcomes. Check out how you can improve user engagements with eLearning interactive modules.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”In conclusion” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1630737236365{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]While technology cannot replace classroom learning, it has emerged as a much-needed supplement to improve learning outcomes. eLearning modules supplement traditional classrooms, making learning fun, immersive and engaging. Students can learn at their own pace and understand the relevance of various concepts in the real world. Teachers too can leverage technology to explain difficult concepts and improve students’ eLearning outcomes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Need to know more about our Products & Services ? How to Convert Your Test Bank to Different LMS Formats

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Computer-based testing or test bank is considered the most standardized and objective method of monitoring and evaluating learning outcomes.  A test bank essentially is a ready-made electronic testing resource that instructors can customize for their teaching. Test bank primarily attempts to provide various questions in different objective formats (recall, recognition, compare/contrast, critical thinking, essay) as students vary in how they can best demonstrate that they have learned the material.  In this blog, we explore test banks, how to program test banks, their benefits, why educational institutes should outsource their test bank conversion, and the process of converting test banks to different LMS formats.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”What is a Test Bank?” font_container=”tag:h1|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1626161240551{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]As prepackaged online resources meant for instructors creating tests and sometimes given through educational institutions, these online test banks are quite attractive. They are often created by the same publisher that produced the corresponding textbook for the particular course and thus, revolve around the main topics of that individual textbook.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”What Does a Test Bank Include?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1626161230925{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]The test banks offer a diverse selection of questions that are usually tailored to the contents of an individual textbook. Further, they also include feedback on a specific answer given by students themselves and exact page references to the textbook. Questions in a test bank can be of any of the following types: Multiple choice and multiple responses  Fill in the blanks Essays/short answers True/false Matching Since test banks cater to a wide range of users, they are available in multiple LMS formats. Besides, they are also password-protected to ensure privacy and give access only to the instructors.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Why Should Educational Institutions Outsource Test Bank Conversion?” font_container=”tag:h3|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1626161361481{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Test bank or computer-based testing offers multiple advantages to online learners and instructors, largely in terms of grading, administration, and scale. There are various test bank formats available. For instance, if the file is .zip, these are typically the old QTI formats and work only in the Canvas environment (can be added in Canvas via import as course content, courses settings, and select the option for QTI zip file). Since many of the titles of the resources have either ExamView, Respondus, and/or ParTest formats available, you can ask vendors about those as they work in most LMSs.  In the case of new titles, the option of test bank download is typically available in the IMSCC format, which would require an IMSCC file converter. IMSCC is primarily a data interchange file used mainly by Canvas. Unlike the .zip file, the IMSCC format works in most of the LMSs and would be imported as course content. The problem here is that you cannot easily tell which format is available without downloading them to see what works in major LMSs.  This is where outsourcing of test bank conversion comes in. There is a wide range of assessment tools for learning systems available in the market, including ExamView, Respondus, EZTest, and more. They help develop assessment applications for the eLearning market that many educational institutions across the globe use. These applications are powerful tools for creating and managing test banks published directly to Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, and IMS QTI format. They are particularly useful for educational institutes looking to switch over to test banks. Further, implementing this assessment software helps everyone involved in the assessment process, including students, for whom it fully streamlines the assessment process. On the contrary, teachers can leverage it to reduce the time taken for them to create exams. Top 7 Best Practices to Follow in Scientific Publishing

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Publications constitute the essential means of communication in science. Although the electronic age has, in general, made the publication process easier and much faster, optimizing the structure of a scientific publication requires a completely different set of skills, proficiency, and best practices. These best practices represent a set of fixed criteria and scientific publication guidelines along with the roles of key people involved in the process, from both ethical and operational points of view. The main aim of adopting these best practices in a scientific publication is to contribute strongly to the consolidation of different areas as fields of scientific knowledge.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”What are the scientific publication guidelines best practices?” font_container=”tag:h1|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1677529394735{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]1. Transparency Scientific publishing process should use a transparent electronic management system for the editorial process, ensuring uniformity, agility, standardization, and traceability. Further, the first page of each article should include complete bibliographic information along with information regarding copyright and editorial processing history, including revision, receipt date, acceptance, and availability on the website. Apart from this, there needs to be a clear definition of all the requirements and procedures for the choice of roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders involved, such as editor-in-chief and associate editors of members of the scientific/editorial policy board. 2. Originality  Another important thing in scientific publishing is the need for originality. All published content must be original, which means that it needs to be ensured that the content has never been published before in any other way, except in conference annuals. Likewise, dissertations and theses must be verified that the author of the said work is necessarily the author of the article, even allowing the provision for the insertion of other authors.  When it comes to articles with previous publications in conference annuals, only the ones containing substantial advances concerning the version presented in the events should be published. It should be explicitly mentioned on the article’s first page, even in the case of fast-track publishing. 3. Ethics in Scientific Publication  Another important area to take care of in scientific publication is the verification of any kind of similarities with existing published work. It should ideally be done during desk review, and the work should be rejected if there is any occurrence of plagiarism. Also, any kind of fees charged by the journal for editing and/or publication should be mentioned to the author(s) right at the time of manuscript submission for evaluation to avoid conflicts at a later stage. 4. Authorship  When it comes to authorship in scientific publication, it must reflect an individual’s contribution to a publication. It should ideally denote their significant scientific or intellectual share in the development of the publication. The idea here is to follow general as well as disciplinary authorship standards when communicating through scientific publications. This translates to describing the roles and contributions of all authors and maintaining a degree of transparency when communicating with policymakers, researchers from other disciplines, and the general public. The authors of a scientific research article or other communication also must ensure that all the press releases and similar institutional documents describing the particular work are factually accurate, updated, and unexaggerated. For this, researchers should work in collaboration with their institutional media affairs team to avoid unfounded claims and reveal various aspects (both positive and negative) of scientific research results.  5. Information Standardization  Information standardization is a critical element of scientific publication. This means to include in the footnotes of each page a properly and summarized bibliographical legend (volume, journal name, article pages) and the logo of the creative common license.  Also, the top of each page should have alternate author name(s) and article title, along with identifying authors and assigning a digital object identifier to all published manuscripts. 6. Institutional and Authorial Multiplicity  Scientific publication requires the editorial process to be shared unbiasedly between researchers and teachers belonging to diverse institutions in a way that avoids conflict or the creation of a proprietary journal, that is, one produced mainly by people affiliated with a specific institution. It is also important to keep in mind that each year, the total share of scientific articles/publications originating from one single institution should not be more than 15% of the total number of published articles. Additionally, irrespective of the author’s position, there shouldn’t be more than one article published by one author. 7. Diligent Data Handling Diligent and effective record keeping and data management are crucial to any scientific publication. This includes everything from undertaking research, collating data, and complete sharing of data/models/code when publicly reporting results. The need is to manage scientific research data in a very effective, responsible, and transparent manner throughout the research process. This includes giving open and free access to research models, data, code, and underlying reported results to the maximum extent possible, keeping in line with various disciplinary standards, publishing policies, and all relevant laws and regulations (such as those related to intellectual property). The best strategy here is to develop a robust data management and sharing plan at the outset of a project. Once done, try to incorporate appropriate data management expertise in the team and understand/ follow all the data collection/ sharing standards, different policies, and regulations of the discipline, journal, institution, and relevant government agencies.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”In Conclusion” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1634812632869{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Scientific publications are gaining a lot of importance in multiple areas of policy-making, including education, environmental protection, economic development, public health, and many other areas. Following the above-mentioned best practices in scientific publication ensures maximum accuracy concerning data. This is true for both database-related reporting and bibliometric purposes, thus increasing the visibility of data and the impact for the greater benefit of authors. 6 Factors to Consider while Digitizing Books at Scale

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”What is Book Digitization?” font_container=”tag:h1|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1563797046439{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Book digitization, digitizing books or book scanning refers to the process of converting physical books, magazines and other records into digital media using an image scanner. As content goes digital, more and more publishers and organizations are digitizing their physical books in formats such as the ASCII to easily distribute and reproduce them in the online space. These digitized books can then be read on digital screens. The ASCII format helps reduce file size and allows text to be searched, reformatted or processed by third-party applications. Physical books are digitized using image scanners, which can be both manual and automated. Some commercial image scanners place the book on a platen, which is a flat glass plate, and then run a light and optical array underneath the glass to scan the book. Manual scanners, on the other hand, place the book face up and then photograph the pages from the above. Glass or plastic sheets are placed on the pages to flatten them and the pages are either turned manually or by an automated paper transport device.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Why Should You Digitize Your Books?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1563797102848{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]While physical books do retain their charm, more and more people are reading books on their tablets and smartphones. By digitizing your books, you can reach a whole new audience, primarily the millennial generation that accesses all its content and information on their mobile devices, tablets, and laptops. Apart from that, there are several advantages of digitizing books at a large scale. Saves Space: Real estate is expensive, and by digitizing books you can eliminate the need for more space, reduce rent and offsite storage fees. Future-proof Books: Digitization is a great way to protect books from damage, loss and theft. Restore Damaged Books: Book scanning can bring damaged booksto life and make them viewable once again. Provides Easier Access: Digitized books can be accessed online or downloaded for offline use. By making books available online you can target new customers who are unable to travel to a brick-and-mortar store to make a purchase. Easy Sharing: You can email or share digitized books on the cloud or other online platforms, anywhere and anytime. Achieve Cost Efficiencies : With digitization, you can reduce the cost of reprinting including sub-costs like equipment management, paper record maintenance and cost of space, and thus achieve cost efficiencies. Environment-friendly: By digitizing your books at scale you can add dramatically to your green credits. Digitization removes the need to print multiple copies, thus, helps to save paper and increase the eco-friendly quotient of your company. [/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Factors to Consider While Digitizing Books at Scale” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1563797161452{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]1. Commercial scanners: To digitize books on scale, consider commercial scanners with high quality digital camera with light sources on both sides. This is placed on a mount or frame in a way that provides easy access to the person or machine to turn over the pages. The advantage of such scanners is that they are faster than overhead scanners. This being said, there are two types of scanners used for large-scale digitization. Unbound/Destructive book scanning:This is a less expensive method for book scanning and so works best for low budget digitization. In this method, the binding of the book is cut off to create a sheaf of loose leaf papers, which are then fed into an automatic document feeder for scanning. Since this method uses common scanning technology, it does not work well for limited edition books or collector’s items. However, it is a useful solution for inexpensive books and with content that can be scanned easily. This method adds to the process time since it requires cutting. This being said, it is easier to scan loose pages. Besides, it is cheaper and faster, and ensures clearer results. Much of the success of this method depends on how the books are unbound. While a paper guillotine can be used to unbind the book, a better option is hand-unbinding as this helps to preserve text, and more critically, allows higher-quality scans on two-page wide materials including graphic art, photos and centre cartoons. Bound/Non-destructive book scanning:Software-driven machines and robots are used to scan the books. This method eliminates the need to unbind books and helps to preserve the contents and create digital image of the page in its current stage. This scanning type is becoming quite popular since it incorporates technologies that can capture high quality digital images with little or no damage to a rare or limited edition book. Some of these scanners also have ultrasonic sensors that can detect dual pages and therefore prevent skipping of pages. Use cases show that these scanners can scan up to 2900 pages per hour and so are ideal for digitizing books at scale. The first step of the book digitization process is to create the master file. While creating the master file, it is important to keep the following parameters in mind: Image Resolution: Image resolution, measured in dots per inch (dpi) is the number of pixels per unit of length – the higher the resolution, the more detailed the digital copy. As a thumb rule, 300 dpi is recommended for greyscale and colour originals; 400 dpi for special manuscripts; and 600 dpi for black and white originals. Colour Management: Colour reproduction from a physical book to digital book can vary greatly depending on the type of scanner and printer used. The problem is resolved by calibrating the different devices with a standardised colour profile, which is then stored with the digital copy. The standardised colour profile is developed based on the ISO-certified ICC_Profile by the International Color Consortium. 2. Editing and Quality Control:Although software solutions can be used for quality control, a better option is to perform the process manually. Once the document is scanned, it should be manually edited to check for errors such as shadowing or finger marks

Comparison Between the Waterfall Model and the V Model in Software Development

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”What is the Waterfall model?” font_container=”tag:h1|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1636639302786{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]The first-ever process model, the waterfall model, is also known as the linear sequential life cycle model in which each phase is completed, and only then can the next phase begin, without any overlapping of phases. It is a sequential process in which the output of a phase serves as the input for the next phase. The sequential phases in the Waterfall model are – requirement analysis, system design, implementation, testing and integration, deployment, and maintenance. Waterfall model application The waterfall model works when the requirements are clear, specific, and fixed. It is ideal when the product is defined clearly, is stable when the technology is non-dynamic and has ample resource back up. The pros of this method are that it is ideal for short projects where the objectives are defined clearly and do not change.  The phases are completed one by one Each stage is well defined It is easy to line up the tasks for each phase It is easy to process and document the results well The cons of this model are: Working software is produced quite late into the life cycle. So one cannot expect results early There is a high amount of risk and uncertainty as it is executed stage by stage: so if there is a change in the objectives or requirements, it cannot be accommodated It is not an appropriate model for long, complex and ongoing projects Intra-stage measuring of progress is not possible Since the final integration is done at the very end, any issue, technological or other, cannot be detected early on in the process [/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”What is the V model?” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1636639518078{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]The V model is a model in which the processes are executed sequentially, resembling a V. The V-shaped model is also called the Verification and Validation model. It is also a sequential process and is an extension of the Waterfall model: the difference or rather the addition is that there is a directly associated testing phase for every single phase in the development cycle. In this model, the testing phase is conducted in parallel with the rest of the process. The verification stage involves business requirement analysis, system design, implementation design, module design. The Verification phases make up one side of the V, and the Validation phases make up the other. The Validation phase comprises unit testing, integration testing, system testing, acceptance testing. The two are joined by the Coding phase. The coding phase: In the coding phase, the actual coding used while the system modules were designed in the Design phase is taken up. The most suitable programming language is chosen based on the architectural and system requirements. And the coding is performed based on the coding guidelines and standards. The code is optimized for best performance after numerous code reviews, and then the final build is checked into the repository. V-Model application V- Model application closely resembles that of the waterfall model, as both are of a sequential type. Requirements must be stated very clearly before the project starts because it is typically expensive to go back and make changes. This model is widely used in the field of medicine as it is very much a disciplined domain. Merits of the V Model: It is easy to understand and apply, owing to its fixed nature. It is a highly-disciplined model, and the phases are completed one by one. It is recommended for smaller projects where the requirements are understood clearly. Easy management due to the rigidity of the model. Every phase has specific deliverables and a review process. The demerits of the V model: There is an element of high risk and uncertainty It is not suitable for complex, dynamic, and object-oriented projects It is not suited for long and continuously running projects, and the projects where requirements keep changing It is difficult to go back and change a functionality once an application enters the testing stage Working software is produced late into the life cycle [/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”In conclusion” font_container=”tag:h3|font_size:18|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1636639636591{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Both the Waterfall model and the V model share similarities, as both are suitable for short, predictable projects that are not dynamic and frequently changing. In response to the demerits of the waterfall model, many modified waterfall models have been introduced that may address some of the criticisms of the primary version. These include the Rapid Development models, Peter DeGrace’s “sashimi model” (waterfall with overlapping phases), waterfall with subprojects, and waterfall with risk reduction and incremental waterfall model.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
